# Session categories

> Group your sessions into categories like Classes or Events, so customers can filter your schedule and browse every session on one page.

Who can do this: admins only.

A category is a label you give a group of sessions, like **Classes**, **Events** or **Sauna sessions**. Customers can filter your schedule by category, and every session gets a card on your **Explore** page, grouped the same way.

Categories are only labels. How a session runs - its dates, prices and capacity - still comes from the session itself.

## Add a category

<Steps>
<Step>Open any session in [Sessions](/go/admin/sessions).</Step>
<Step>In **Details**, open the **Category** field and choose **Edit categories...**.</Step>
<Step>Select **Add category**, type a name, pick a colour and press **Save**.</Step>
</Steps>

The new category is picked for that session straight away. To put other sessions in it, open each one and choose it in the **Category** field. Once you have a category, you can also type a new name in the field and choose **Create**.

You can have up to 5 categories, each up to 24 characters. Name them as groups, in the plural ("Classes", not "Class"), because customers see the name on its own, as a filter and, once you have two or more categories, as a label above each session on Explore.

A session can be in one category or none. Sessions with no category still show under **All**.

## Colours

Each category has a colour, and every session in it shows that colour on your calendar, your Sessions list and your booking page. While a session is in a category, its own colour picker is hidden. Take it out of the category and it goes back to its own colour.

To change a category's colour or name, open **Edit categories...**, then **Edit** in the category's **⋯** menu.

## What customers see

- **Filters on your schedule.** A row of filters above your schedule: **All**, then each category in your order. Choosing one shows only its sessions. **Private session** sits beside them and combines with any category.
- **The Explore page.** One card per session, soonest first, with its next date and how many more times it runs. Customers reach it from the menu and from **View all** above your featured sessions. Rename the page in the **Page name** field at the foot of **Edit categories...**.

Use **Move up** and **Move down** in a category's **⋯** menu to set the order of the filters.

## Different cancellation rules per category

A category can have a longer cancellation or date-change window than the rest of your venue, for example classes that lock 12 hours before. Open **Edit categories...**, then **Cancellation and changes...** in the category's **⋯** menu. The strictest of your venue's, the category's and the price's windows applies. See [cancellation policy](/docs/cancellation-policy).

## Common questions

1. **I can't see the Category field.** Categories come with the newer booking page design, which every venue that isn't live yet already has. If your booking page went live before 28 October 2026, it moves to the new design soon, and the field appears then.
2. **What happens if I delete a category?** Its sessions stay on your booking page, under **All**, and go back to their own colours.
3. **Can I link straight to one category?** Yes - add `?type=` and the category's name in lowercase with hyphens to your Explore page link, like `/your-venue/explore?type=classes`.
4. **I have more than one location. Does Explore follow the customer's choice?** Yes - Explore shows the sessions at the location chosen on your banner, and a customer can change it there. Someone opening an Explore link directly starts on all locations. If you ask customers to [choose a location first](/docs/locations#ask-customers-to-choose-a-location-first), Explore doesn't ask.
5. **Do categories change my emails?** No. Confirmation emails, reminders and calendar entries never show the category.
